Post-Minimalism and the Experience of the Spectator

‘I am a South Wales based artist and researcher. Working with textiles and other pliable materials, I produce abstract sculptures that embody ambiguity,  indeterminacy and openness. The soft forms explore the relationship between viewer and artwork in the act of experience. These works invite the viewer to seek meaning through the experience of material, process, and form. Artist expression is reduced in favour of the expression of matter.

My practice adopted an academic focus over the last few years during the completion of my Doctoral  Research at Cardiff School of Art and Design – Post-minimalism and the experience of the spectator. I am interested in the phenomenon that simplicity of form does not necessarily evoke a simple experience. I therefore employ a certain formlessness, subtlety or blankness in my works, so they remain pared-back but still visually and conceptually interesting. Opposing elements are also utilized – like order versus   chaos and painting versus sculpture – to further subvert a singular reading and create works that are open in form and not just open to interpretation.’
