Raphael is an 18-year-old from Cardigan in West Wales. He recently completed A levels in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry at Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi. In September he will begin his undergraduate piano studies with Professor Gareth Owen at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
Having won the Young Musician of Dyfed award, and the Urdd Eisteddfod’s Piano Solo for year 10 and under 19 competitions in 2024, he has given several recitals across West Wales in recent years, with highlights including performances at Musicfest Aberystwyth, St Davids Cathedral Music Festival, and the Fishguard Festival of Music. In October, he will make his concerto debut with the Lampeter Chamber Orchestra at Rhosygilwen, performing Mozart’s 27th Piano Concerto in B-flat major, K.595.
His musical interests are very broad, ranging from the classical styles of Mozart and Beethoven to the revolutionary romanticism of Chopin and Schumann, and the modernist, contemporary, and often jazz-influenced styles of composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, such as Prokofiev, Barber, Ligeti, and Sir Stephen Hough.
Raphael is very grateful for the opportunity to perform at Musicfest for a second consecutive year and is eager to share his varied programme of music with the audience of the festival.
