This 1955 Japanese classic, directed by Kinuyo Tanaka, has been described as 'a whirlwind of tragedy'. Certainly the protagonist Fumiko has a lot on her plate, as she grapples with an unfaithful husband, divorce, a terminal breast cancer diagnosis, a younger lover, and becoming a poet.
