Pansy

July 13th – Nov 24th  2024

Pansy is a collaboration between Catrin Webster and Roy Efrat. The exhibition explores the complex meanings of the word ‘Pansy’ and comprises large scale oil painting on canvas and video mapping. Pansy combines abstraction with figuration, performance and narrative.

Inspired by Franz Kafka’s 1926 novel, The Castle, in which we see the protagonist K. struggle with authority, repeatedly trying to make progress but unable to move beyond the Castle’s snowy borders. In Efrat and Webster’s work, the Pansy (P.) navigates a parallel journey across the vast, softly painted canvas. Humorous and playful, the work references identity, perception, sexuality, and gender.

This exhibition was commissioned by the Glynn Vivian Gallery.
