Ray Finch (1914-2012) and Winchcombe Pottery
Ionawr 25 January – Mehefin 08 June 2025
This exhibition celebrates the work of Ray Finch, a renowned craftsman potter who took over Winchcombe Pottery in Gloucestershire in the mid-20th century from his mentor, Michael Cardew. Finch, who became Cardew’s apprentice at age 22, eventually took charge of the pottery and later became its owner. Under his leadership, he built a thriving business

The Ceramic Collection at Aberystwyth University is one of the major collections of British and international non-industrial ceramics in Britain. It is part of the School of Art Museum and Galleries which has full museum accreditation status and is supported by a Ceramic Archive. We actively collect British and international ceramics with a particular focus on representing ceramicists working in Wales.

The Ceramics Gallery is on the lower floor of Aberystwyth Arts Centre and features a selection of pioneer studio pottery, including work by Bernard Leach, Shoji Hamada, Frances Richards, The Martin Brothers, Norah Braden, Katharine Pleydell-Bouverie, Michael Cardew, Lucie Rie, Hans Coper and others. Also on display in the back gallery are some examples of Welsh and English 18th and 19th century slipware, as well as Swansea and Nantgarw porcelain. The front gallery has a changing programme of exhibitions featuring contemporary ceramic makers and curated shows from the collection. Talks, events and family activities are organised with the Arts Centre throughout the year. http://www.ceramics-aberystwyth.com
