Saoirse’s work explores her connection with familiar landscapes, her home terrain of West Wales: the landscape, the coast, the ecology. She takes inspiration from local colour, plant life, atmosphere and weather having spent her childhood on small islands, surrounded by swirling tide races and wild, wind-blown seas.
Saoirse describes her process as driven by both her surroundings and internal world. A sense of place, interleaved with memories and associations. “In the studio, I allow space for exploration of materials, for chance developments and abstraction, inviting the paint and torn paper to direct the process. The work develops according to its own trajectory, while staying rooted in my own experience and my feelings of belonging and being at home in the Welsh landscape.”
