Are you interested in a career as a theatre technician? Do you have a passion for lighting, sound or stage management?

Aberystwyth Arts Centre is offering a 12-month Theatre Technical Apprenticeship, in partnership with Wales Millennium Centre.  It’s a great opportunity to learn the trade through a combination of on-the-job training and support from Wales’s professional theatre teams.  All our previous apprentices have gone on to full time professional technician roles in venues, international tours or as busy freelancers.

The successful candidate will be based at Aberystwyth Arts Centre but employed by the Wales Millennium Centre.  The apprenticeship is operated in conjunction with Cardiff & Vale College, who will be the further education provider for the qualification side of the apprenticeship which leads to a BAIIB Certificate (Level 3) in Technical Theatre. In addition to this, you will also achieve an ABTT Bronze Award (specialising in Flying, Ropes & Knots and Electrics) and will undertake further professional training with ETC Connect (lighting desk), TTS Training (PAT testing), Total Training Solutions (rigging) and Nationwide Platform (MEWPs) to name a few.

There will be an induction week in Cardiff, and potentially other weeks in Cardiff for industry standard ‘off the job’ training, with members of the Association of British Theatre Technicians (and other providers). Accommodation in Cardiff will be provided if needed. There may also be scope for apprentices to swap venues from time to time, to broaden their experience.

Please note that in line with the work in a busy theatre environment the hours will not be 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday!  It is a full time role (35 hours) and there will be working at evenings and weekends, so we encourage you to really think hard about whether this type of work is suitable for you and also to think about your travelling arrangements and whether it is feasible/viable for you at this point.

Salary £11,648.   For an informal chat please contact Pete Lochery pdl@aber.ac.uk
